Phages of phytopathogenic bacteria: High potential, but challenging application

نویسندگان

چکیده

Phytopathogenic bacteria are one of the most significant causes crop yield losses. Until now, direct treatment bacterioses was limited to application antibacterial compounds or resistance inducers. This is about change due revolutionary discovery phages. Indeed, bacteriophages look very promising as therapy agents: cheap, self-amplifying, self-eliminating, and safe for host organism. However, phage plant diseases remains a “direction with high potential”, which, so far, has few successful implication cases. Here, we discuss recent advances in research, focusing on challenges associated evaluation biological activity, under both laboratory environmental conditions.

The Metabolism of Phytopathogenic Bacteria

In view of the economic importance of plant pathogenic bacteria it is understandable that most of the work on these organisms should have been devoted to problems of pathogenicity, host range, and symptoms, specificity, distribution, and control (Burkholder, 1948; Hildebrandt, 1950). The taxonomy of these bacteria has been the subject of numerous investigations (Burkholder, 1948) and significan...

Bacteria, Phages and Septicemia

The use of phages is an attractive option to battle antibiotic resistant bacteria in certain bacterial infections, but the role of phage ecology in bacterial infections is obscure. Here we surveyed the phage ecology in septicemia, the most severe type of bacterial infection. We observed that the majority of the bacterial isolates from septicemia patients spontaneously secreted phages active aga...

Antagonism of Lactic Acid Bacteria against Phytopathogenic Bacteria.

A variety of lactic acid bacteria, isolated from plant surfaces and plant-associated products, were found to be antagonistic to test strains of the phytopathogens Xanthomonas campestris, Erwinia carotovora, and Pseudomonas syringae. Effective "in vitro" inhibition was found both on agar plates and in broth cultures. In pot trials, treatment of bean plants with a Lactobacillus plantarum strain b...

Global virulence regulation networks in phytopathogenic bacteria.

Phytopathogens coordinate multifaceted life histories and deploy stratified virulence determinants via complex, global regulation networks. We dissect the global regulation of four distantly related model phytopathogens to evaluate large-scale events and mechanisms that determine successful pathogenesis. Overarching themes include dependence on centralized cell-to-cell communication systems, pe...
